On Publishing a Novel

Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamed of writing my very own book. I’ve been making up stories ever since I could string sentences together. As I grew up, I changed a great deal, but one thing that has never changed is my desire to publish a novel. Now that I’m an “adult” I’m finally in a position to fulfill that dream.

From the moment I began writing Royal Thief, two years ago, it quickly became apparent that there was more to publishing a book than just writing it. There’s the numerous edits and rewrites, the beta reads and critiques, the professional edit once your book is finally in somewhat decent shape…you get the picture. Many people think of being an author as a relatively solitary profession, but that is far from the truth. One person may be able to write a book, but it truly does take a village to share that book with the world.

My advice to anyone considering publishing a book is this: embrace your village. You wrote this amazing piece of work, and never let anyone tell you that isn’t an impressive accomplishment. But if you truly want to publish that work you are going to need a lot of help. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. As someone who is naturally shy and introverted, it was so difficult for me to reach out to people. So I know what a struggle that can be. But you have to put yourself out there and take a few chances. I guarantee it will be more than worth it when you finally see your book out there for the world to experience.
